Crushed and Shattered

Don’t cry!

People will laugh at you!

It must be your fault!

These words crushed and shattered Willow. Without siblings, she could only count on herself to survive, but how? She was a child.

Willow quickly learned to conceal her fears, sadness and loneliness. She would simply wear a different mask to suit the situation. Her internal suffering must never be exposed.
Willow’s family were like nomads on the move, with limited opportunities for her to make strong connections.

Another new school?

Would she be accepted this time?

Which mask would make the kids like her?

Bullied since the age of 3, Willow had hoped to find a mask that would protect her. At school, kids threatened her with bodily harm. At home, she feared her father’s quick temper and harsh spankings. Willow felt completely alone in the world. Where could she feel safe?

She knew she did not need to wear a mask around Tippy, the family cat. Although, sadly, Tippy had mysteriously disappeared and she missed her dearly. Her turbulent childhood had left an emptiness, but in contrast, she was grateful for having been gifted with unconditional love and acceptance from animals. How could she ever repay them? Due to her fondness of science, and in particular, microscopes, Willow dreamt of becoming a Veterinarian one day. She had always wanted her own microscope, but secretly, Willow’s greatest wish was to talk with the animals!

When was the last time you noticed yourself wearing a mask, and why?

Reader's Reviews:
  • "It is funny, because with Covid we now have to wear a mask, and to be honest, despite the many complaints, I feel a sense of comfort wearing it, it provides me with a sense of anonymity...how weird is that??" ~~N.G. (Portugal)
